Size the risk before the trade.
Imagine a paper account of $1,000. For this example only, your planned-loss budget is $10, your stop distance 5%, variable costs 1% and fixed costs $2.
Position = ($10 − $2) ÷ (5% + 1%) = $133.33
That models a $10 loss if the planned exit executes with those costs. A gap, liquidity failure or blocked sale could still lose the entire $133.33 principal plus costs. A stop is an exit plan; it cannot guarantee a maximum loss. These are teaching inputs, not suggested allocations.
Practice: What if variable costs rise to 2%? The model becomes $8 ÷ 7% = $114.29. What if fixed costs reach $10? There is no positive position within this particular loss budget.
